QuWack (UM)
“A unique and continuous performance in customised gallery conditions featuring eight acts from UK, Portugal and Holland across two stages”
BASS CLEF / GABRIEL FERRANDINI/INFINITE LIVEZ / DJ SNIFF/TEAM BRICK / KATAPULTO / ALFREDO CARAJILLO / TIAGO MORNA
Quwack is a unique and entertaining way to experience live music formulated by Qu Junktions, pitting a certain breed of intrepid musical solo adventurers together in customised gallery conditions. A continuous, unrehearsed performance from multiple acts utilising a unique twin stage/sound system set up with you, the audience, in the heart of the action. Quwack (UM) extracts four wayward and open-eared musicians from the UK’s fertile underground and pairs them with four more from Portugal and a wild card Dutch practitioner for some non-stop tag team action. Trombone-led dubstep collides freely with loose-limbed free percussion, subterranean drones, turntable pyrotechnics, spoken word and wonky hip hop. Musical and cultural differences are encouraged to run riot, as hi-fi/lo-fi, pop/avant garde, electronic/acoustic rub up against one another and genres get twisted into new and unexpected shapes.
Bass Clef is one of the dance floor mavericks to rise from the UK’s flourishing dubstep scene, and he does it live-style with trombone and percussion attack. Rack alongside Lee Perry, Buraka Som Sistema and Benga. Gabriel Ferrandini is a tactile, all-channels open drummer and an avid musical explorer, equally at home collaborating with power electronics groups, jazz ensembles or tearing it up solo. Infinite Livez is the Gameboy programmer, comic book artist, and soft toy lover who puts out wonky hip hop on Big Dada, plays with electro jazz boffins and self-releases freestyle noise cds for fun. DJ Sniff is a dextrous and genre-splicing turntable musician from the Netherlands via USA and Japan. Team Brick plays anything he can, scores for orchestras, is cathartic and heavily epic. He plays in Geoff Barrow (Portishead) new Beak> project. Katapulto relocated to Bristol from Poland and lets broken and smashed pop-beat references slip into his electronic collages. Alfredo Carajillo is a kinetic saxophone player and electronic improviser, who bisects Lisbon’s jazz and sound art scenes. Tiago Morna lends a heart-felt and melodic influence to the proceedings. This versatile Portuguese guitar player is a regular on the Lisboa Fado scene and plays with experimental hip-hop groups such as Macacos do Chinês.
QuWack is inspired by rave, Merzbow, cartoon audio collage, pod crashes, aristocratic outcasts, low end hip hop theory, Top Of The Pops, discarded street technology, enharmonics, People Like Us and Tomorrow’s World.
